Ahhh New Zealand! It will forever hold a special place in my heart. As someone who has traveled the world, lived in gorgeous places such as the mountains of Colorado, New Zealand has got to be one of the most special places in the world. I love getting to travel & explore, New Zealand is just STUNNING & I cannot overstate that fact (yes, it’s a fact).

New Zealand is full of diverse landscapes that all make for unique elopement locations. The North Island is a bit more known for it’s tropical vibes but also has some mountains as well as Hobbiton. The South Island is more known for its vast lakes & towering mountain peaks in the national parks across the island.

The native Māori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa (pronounced Ow-teh-ah-ROH-ah), which is often translated as “Land of the Long White Cloud.” This name reflects the way early Polynesian explorers, the ancestors of the Māori, are believed to have first seen the islands—beneath a long white cloud formation.

Queenstown is one of the most popular elopement destinations in New Zealand. Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, alpine scenery, & crystal-clear lakes, it offers various adventurous activities. Queenstown is also known as the “adventure capital of the world”. Surrounded by the Southern Alps & nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, this place is one of my favorite towns to stay in while in New Zealand. Couples can choose from garden ceremonies, lakeside settings, or exchanging vows on a mountaintop. The town’s accommodations, wineries, & great dining options add an elegant touch to your adventures. Queenstown offers a large range of adrenaline-pumping activities like bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, skiing, & more.

Fiordland National Park & Milford Sound

If you want to elope in New Zealand, Fiordland National Park & Milford Sound should be at the very TOP of your list! As New Zealand’s largest National Park on the South Island, it offers some of the most amazing landscapes, cliffs, waterfalls, & fjords. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the renowned Milford Sound, a must-visit destination. I totally fell in love with Milford Sound & even just the drive in & seeing the alpine parrots flying around the lush mountains was just an incredible experience.

Lake Tekapo & Lake Pukaki

Lake Tekapo is a perfect choice for an elopement, known for its outstanding panoramic views, turquoise waters, majestic alpine scenery, and the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd. This picturesque destination offers a serene and magical setting, perfect for a romantic elopement and intimate ceremony. Helicopter access is a top favorite. The location is also famous for its velvet night skies, ideal for stargazing and night photos.

Lake Wakatipu

Lake Wakatipu can be your ideal choice for a New Zealand elopement. This S-shaped lake offers a stunning mountain backdrop, clear waters, and natural beauty. Located in the heart of the Southern Alps, it is accessible by helicopter or boat. Known as “Queenstown’s Crown Jewel,” it’s perfect for your special day.

Abel Tasman National Park

Another elopement spot in New Zealand is Abel Tasman National Park. It offers golden beaches, native forests, granite cliffs, and its famous coast track, making it an intimate setting to tie the knot. You may need to secure a permit depending on which part of the park you want to have the ceremony.

Catlins Forest Park

Catlins Forest Park is an enchanting elopement destination, famous for its ancient forests, rugged coastlines, incredible hiking trails, and stunning waterfalls. If you and your partner love mystical backdrops for an adventurous elopement, this place is an ideal choice. Must-visit spots include Cathedral Caves, Nugget Point, and Purakaunui Falls.

Legal Requirements for Getting Married in New Zealand

First, you’ll need to apply for a marriage license through the Department of Internal Affairs, which can be done online or in person. You’ll need to submit a Notice of Intended Marriage at least three days before your ceremony. An authorized marriage celebrant must conduct the ceremony, & you’ll also need two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign the marriage certificate. Once your vows are exchanged & the paperwork is signed, your marriage is legally recognized!

• Marriage License: Secure a marriage license from the Department of Internal Affairs. This can be done online or in person.
• Authorized Marriage Celebrant: In New Zealand, only authorized marriage celebrants can legally perform marriage ceremonies. Choose a celebrant registered with the Department of Internal Affairs.
• Notice of Intended Marriage: Although New Zealand doesn’t have a mandatory waiting period, you’ll need to fill out a Notice of Intended Marriage form, which must be submitted to your celebrant at least three days before the ceremony.
• Witnesses: You’ll need two witnesses to attend the ceremony. They must be at least 18 years old and sign the marriage documents.
• Marriage Certificate: You will receive a marriage certificate after the ceremony. This is legally binding and must be kept safely.

Best Time of Year to Elope in New Zealand

Timing your elopement can make all the difference when it comes to setting the perfect mood and capturing the kind of memories you want. If you’re from the northern hemisphere, remember that New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere & the seasons are opposite! New Zealand’s seasons each bring their own vibe & unique backdrops. Whether you’re chasing sunshine, autumn leaves, or winter snow, there’s a time of year that’ll fit exactly what you envision for your special day.

Summer (December – February): Summer is the most popular time for couples to say their vows, thanks to the warm, sunny weather. The start of summer is when the lupines are blooming along the shores of the lakes & you can access higher elevation locations with a hiking elopement. You can still find some snow in the form of glaciers & leftover snow in the shadows of the mountains.

Autumn (March – May): The golden hues of autumn can bring stunning depth to your elopement photos. With a bit cooler temperatures, it can get a bit chilly at times, so it’s worth planning your outfits (and your guests’ outfits) with that in mind.

Winter (June – August): If snow-capped mountains, skiing, and cozy vibes are your thing, winter is your season. It’s perfect for a more intimate, adventure-filled celebration, with plenty of snow for those magical winter photos.

Spring (September – November): Spring brings the start of warmer days. Here’s everything you need to know about visas, finding the best flight deals, & getting around once you’re in the country.

Do You Need a Visa? Understanding the NZeTA

What is the NZeTA Visa?

Before traveling to New Zealand, most visitors need to apply for the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). This is not a visa but an entry requirement for travelers from visa waiver countries. The NZeTA allows you to stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days and is valid for two years from the date of approval.

How Much Does the NZeTA Cost?

The cost of applying for the NZeTA depends on how you apply:

• Via the mobile app: NZD $17
• Via the website: NZD $23
• You’ll then also pay the NZD $100 International Visitor Conservation & Tourism Levy (IVL) fee

The IVL helps to protect New Zealand’s natural beauty and improve tourist infrastructure.

How & When to Apply for the NZeTA

It’s best to apply for your NZeTA well in advance of your trip to avoid any last-minute issues. The application process is straightforward and can be completed online.

• Download the NZeTA app or visit the official NZeTA website.
• Provide your passport details, travel information, & pay the required fees.

The approval process usually takes up to 72 hours, but it’s wise to apply well in advance of your departure to allow for any unexpected delays. Both the NZeTA & IVL are valid for multiple entries over two years, so you can also apply to get it much more in advance!

Finding the Best Flights to New Zealand

One of the best tools for finding cheap flights to New Zealand is Google Flights. Here’s how to get the most out of it:

1. Set up flight alerts: Head to Google Flights and enter your departure city and destination (e.g., Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch). You can then set an alert to notify you when prices drop.
2. Flexible dates: If your elopement dates are flexible, use Google Flights’ calendar feature to view price trends across different days, helping you find the cheapest options.
3. Explore nearby airports: Consider flying into smaller airports like Queenstown or Rotorua for potentially cheaper fares and a more direct route to your elopement location.
4. Off-peak seasons: For the best deals, try to book flights outside peak tourist seasons (summer from December to February), and avoid major holidays.

Book as early as possible (ideally 3-6 months ahead) to secure the best prices, & remember to check your baggage allowance as New Zealand’s domestic flights may have stricter weight limits than international carriers.

In addition, be mindful of the Māori culture, which holds deep spiritual connections to the land. Many sacred sites, or wāhi tapu, are significant to Māori communities. It’s important to approach these areas with the utmost respect, & when in doubt, ask for guidance on how to honor local customs. Learning a few basic phrases in Te Reo Māori (the Māori language) can also be a meaningful way to show respect for the local culture during your elopement.
