Your Guide to Grand Teton Weddings & Elopements
The Tetons offer one of the best mountain backdrops for weddings & elopements, combining natural beauty with the amenities of Jackson Hole. This guide covers everything you need—from venues to tips—to plan your perfect day in these mountains. As someone who’s spent countless days exploring this incredible region, I can’t say enough about how special it is. Jackson, Wyoming, with its charming mountain-town vibe, adds the perfect mix of adventure & luxury, offering everything from cozy, laid-back lodges to high-end dining experiences. Yes, Jackson can be on the pricier side, but the views, the atmosphere, & the memories are absolutely worth it. If you’re dreaming of an elopement with a dramatic mountain backdrop, the Tetons might just be your perfect match.
Why the Tetons Make for an Amazing Place to Get Married
Dramatic Peaks: The Teton Range is uniquely dramatic. Unlike many mountain ranges that gradually rise and blend into the landscape, the Tetons shoot up abruptly from the valley floor, creating a striking, postcard-perfect backdrop.
Accessibility: Many of the mountain ranges that I love require long treks to reach the best views. In the Tetons, jaw-dropping vistas are easily accessible by car or very short hikes. Schwabacher’s Landing, Jenny Lake, & Mormon Row are just minutes from Jackson & offer epic scenery without a huge adventure (though there’s plenty of that if you want it!).
The Magic of Jackson Hole: Jackson Hole itself is part of what makes the Tetons so special. The blend of high-end dining, charming shops, & outdoor culture creates an unforgettable experience. While it’s true Jackson can be a bit pricier, the unique combination of adventure & luxury is hard to beat.
Combination of Wildness & Comfort: The Tetons offer a blend of untamed beauty as well as “creature comforts”. You can spend your day summiting a remote peak & your evening enjoying gourmet dining or relaxing in a luxury lodge. Jackson Hole brings a touch of sophistication to your mountain experience.
Best Ceremony Locations in the Tetons
When it comes to choosing the perfect spot to say your vows in the Tetons, you honestly can’t go wrong—this place is pure magic everywhere you turn. But finding your spot, the one that feels like it was made just for the two of you, is such an exciting part of the journey! I’ve spent so much time exploring this incredible area (and trust me, it never gets old), so I want to help you find the spot that feels just right for your day. From iconic locations to hidden gems, there’s something for everyone here in the Tetons!
And if you want help with locations & logistics, I’m your planning assistant AND photographer! You don’t want to get stuck figuring things out on your own– that’s where I come in. View my packages & contact me to set up a time to chat.
Mormon Row
Mormon Row is sometimes known as the “most photographed barn in the world”. As one of the most popular locations in the park, especially for sunrise, this historic barn is beautiful & cool to see, but it is very popular. This location is most popular at sunset & especially sunrise.
Group Size Limit: up to 25 or 40 people depending
Glacier View Turnout
Glacier view has that very “classic” Teton view. Even though it is located right off the road, this location isn’t as popular as other areas & the pavement + plenty of parking makes it very accessible for guests. This location is gorgeous & isn’t super busy, especially at sunset or sunrise.
Group Size Limit: up to 15 people
Schwabacher Landing
Schwabacher Landing is one of the most popular locations both for tourists & for elopements in the Tetons. Even though it is popular, I do love this location! There are two separate little sections here & if you know where to go & when, there is still some privacy at this popular spot.
Group Size Limit: up to 25 people
Snake River Overlook
Snake River Overlook is a beautiful location for landscape photography. In fact, Ansel Adams photographed from this specific spot in 1942 in one of his famous images. This can be an ok spot but isn’t my favorite for the best views when it comes to photographing people here.
Group Size Limit: up to 25 people
Mountain View Turnout
Mountain View Turnout is a lesser-known gem in Grand Teton National Park, offering a different angle to view the Tetons from. The area is relatively flat & covered in sagebrush. It’s not too popular of a location & offers a great view of the mountains.
Group Size Limit: up to 25 people
Colter Bay
Colter Bay Swim Beach on the serene shores of Jackson Lake, offers great views of the Tetons. This location is ideal if you want a waterfront ceremony with mountains. The area provides some tree cover for shade & has picnic tables nearby for picnics.
Group Size Limit: up to 40 people

Small Dispersed Ceremonies in Grand Teton National Park
If you’re envisioning a more intimate ceremony in Grand Teton National Park, the Small Dispersed Ceremony Permit offers wonderful flexibility. This permit allows you to select a unique location beyond the six designated sites, accommodating up to 12 people—including you, your partner, officiant, photographer, & any guests.
With this option, you can choose a spot that resonates with you, whether it’s a secluded lakeshore, an open meadow, or another mountain overlook. However, it’s important to ensure your chosen location doesn’t interfere with general visitor use or harm park resources. Certain areas, such as the paved trails around Jenny Lake, Hidden Falls, String Lake, Inspiration Point, Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve, & park cemeteries are off-limits for these ceremonies.
Getting Married at The Wedding Tree
If you haven’t heard of The Wedding Tree, let me tell you about this little hidden gem in the national forest! Perched just outside the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park on Bridger-Teton National Forest land, this spot offers great views of the Teton Range framed by trees. Unlike some of the busier locations in the park, this spot offers a sense of privacy that’s hard to beat. There’s a short, easy trail leading to the site, so you don’t have to worry about a strenuous hike. The location is also flexible—you can plan a simple elopement or bring a small group of guests to celebrate with you.
Reserving The Wedding Tree: To reserve this ceremony location, fill out the form from Friends of the Bridger-Teton at least 30 days in advance and complete their Operating Plan outlining your event details to help protect the area. A $300 non-refundable fee is required with your submission, which supports the site’s maintenance & preservation. There is room for up to 6 cars to park. Please keep in mind that setups like arches are not allowed here.
Why You Should Look Into the Idaho Side of the Tetons
The Idaho side of the Tetons is such an underrated gem, & it’s one of my favorite parts of this area. While the Wyoming side gets all the attention (and the crowds), the Idaho side offers a quieter, more laid-back vibe. You still get the stunning views of the Tetons!. Plus, the small mountain towns like Driggs & Victor have this charming, “down-to-earth” feel with hidden gems like cozy restaurants, unique Airbnbs, & plenty of outdoor adventure options. It’s also typically a bit more budget-friendly than Jackson, which means you can enjoy the same level of beauty without breaking the bank. Just keep in mind if you are staying in Idaho & getting married closer to Jackson it can be quite a long drive to the park.
I have always wanted to photograph an epic hiking elopement at sunset with this view, because how epic would that be!?
There are also other hidden gems, less popular locations, & places to elope in the Tetons that are outside of the national park in the national forest areas surrounding the Tetons. I don’t share hidden gem locations online because those places stay magical when they’re protected from crowds & overexposure. The Tetons are full of serene, untouched spots, & I believe in preserving their beauty for those who visit with care & intention. Instead, I share these locations exclusively with my clients, helping you find the perfect spot that aligns with your vision. With my in-depth knowledge of the area, I’ll guide you to locations that feel special & help you navigate everything from timing to weather, so your day is amazing!

The Legal Stuff: Getting Permits & Your Wyoming Marriage License
Before you can officially get married in the stunning Tetons, there are a couple of important boxes to check. The good news? Both getting your Wyoming marriage license & securing a Special Use Permit for your ceremony are straightforward processes—as long as you know what to expect. From making sure your paperwork is in order to ensuring your ceremony is fully approved for a national park setting, I walk you through the legal details so you can focus on planning the fun stuff. And if you’re intimidated doing this on your own, I am an elopement photographer + planner & help you with all of this!
How to Get a Wedding Permit for Grand Teton National Park
Grand Teton National Park requires a Special Use Permit for any wedding or commitment ceremony held within the park. There are two different types of permits depending on your group size for your wedding or elopement. This permit ensures that your event aligns with park regulations, helps protect the environment, & minimizes disruptions for other visitors.
Reserved Site-Specific Ceremony Permits: Ideal for groups up to 25 participants, these permits are available from mid-May through mid-October at six different designated locations with up to 40 people. Note that popular sites such as Schwabacher Landing, Mormon Row, & Colter Bay are already fully booked for the 2025 season.
Small Dispersed Ceremony Permits: Suitable for intimate gatherings of up to 12 participants, these permits offer flexibility in choosing a location & are available year-round. Applications must be submitted at least 30 days prior to your desired date.
Complete & Submit the Application: Download & fill out the Special Use Permit Application Form with details about your ceremony, including preferred location, date, time, & number of participants. Then email your completed form to Ensure all information is accurate to avoid processing delays.
Application Fee: A non-refundable fee of $200 is required. Payment instructions will be provided upon application submission.
One important thing to note about the Grand Teton National Park Special Use Permit is that it is for the ceremony part of your day only. You can go to other areas of the park & take photos in all sorts of different spots without needing a permit!
Wyoming Marriage Licenses
Getting your marriage license in Wyoming is pretty easy & Teton County makes the process really straightforward. But Jackson Hole is easily one of the most popular places in the country to get married, & for good reason—it’s absolutely stunning! But with all that popularity, it’s important to plan ahead when it comes to getting your marriage license. I recommend scheduling your appointment one to two business days before your ceremony to make sure everything goes smoothly. This way, you can avoid any last-minute stress & focus on soaking up all the excitement of your big day!
Both of You Must Be Present: You and your partner will need to visit the Teton County Clerk’s Office together to apply in person. They’re located at 200 S. Willow Street in Jackson, & their hours are Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Requirements: Make sure to bring valid government-issued photo IDs, like a driver’s license or passport. This is to verify your identity & that you’re both at least 18 years old (or have the proper consent if younger). You will also need your father’s first, middle, & last name, where he was born as well as your mother’s first, middle, & maiden last name, & the place she was born.
No Waiting Period: The good news? Wyoming doesn’t have a waiting period, so you can use your license as soon as it’s issued. This is helpful when you’re not local & are planning a destination wedding or elopement in the Tetons.
The Cost: The marriage license fee is $30 & it’s non-refundable. You’ll want to have cash or a check handy since some offices may not accept cards.
Officiants & Witnesses: Your ceremony must be performed by a legally authorized officiant. This can be a judge, an ordained minister, or even a friend or family member who’s been ordained. Your license must also be signed by two witnesses. If you’re having a true 2 person elopement, I’ve even had hikers or national park visitors sign marriage licenses. And as a photographer in the Tetons, I am also ordained!
Recording the License: After your ceremony, you or your officiant will need to return the signed license to the Clerk’s Office for recording. It must be returned within 10 days.
The Clerk’s Office in Jackson is super helpful, & if you have any questions, you can always give them a call at 307-733-4430. They’re there to make sure everything goes smoothly so you can focus on enjoying your wedding day. Be sure to check out all the info from Teton County about marriage licenses.

The Best Time of Year to Elope in the Tetons
The Tetons are as wild as they are beautiful, & there is ever-changing weather in these mountains. It’s not uncommon to experience sunshine, wind, rain, & even snow—all in the same day! The key is to embrace the unpredictability & come prepared. Think layers, sturdy footwear, & a positive mindset ready for adventure. Being ready for anything will help you fully enjoy your day in these wild mountains.
May: A Fresh Start to the Season
By May, the snow is really starting to melt in the valley, & the Tetons are “waking up” so to speak. While higher elevations may still be snowy, the lower areas become accessible, offering that perfect mix of epic snow-capped peaks & lush green valleys. It’s a great time for privacy, as it’s just before the summer crowds arrive. Keep in mind, though, that the weather can be unpredictable, & some trails might still be muddy or closed.
June through August: Peak Wildflower Season
If you’re dreaming of vibrant wildflower meadows, late June through mid-August is your window. During this time, the valleys & trails burst with color—think lupines, Indian paintbrush, & other stunning blooms. It’s also when the days are longest, giving you plenty of time to explore, celebrate, & soak up the sunshine. But with summer comes popularity, so planning your ceremony during a weekday or at quieter times of the day can help you find the serenity you’re looking for.
September through October: The Magic of Fall
Fall in the Tetons is beautiful & less busy. Starting in mid-September, the aspen trees turn a brilliant gold, & the cooler air makes everything feel crisp. The summer crowds have thinned out, giving you a more intimate experience, & wildlife activity really picks up as animals prepare for winter. If you’re all about vibrant colors & sweater weather, fall is a great choice.
December to April: A Snowy Wonderland
Winter in the Tetons is freaking cold but so beautiful. The snow-covered peaks & frozen lakes are quite amazing in the winter. Just be prepared for the cold, shorter days, & potentially challenging conditions. It’s perfect if you love the magic of winter & are okay bundling up for your vows!
Wildfire & Smoke Considerations
Late summer (especially August & early September) is wildfire season in the West, which can bring smoky skies to the Tetons. While it doesn’t happen every year, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning during these months. Checking air quality reports closer to your date & having a flexible attitude can make all the difference if conditions shift.
Why These Mountains Are Different
The Tetons are unlike any other mountain range because they don’t gradually rise from the surrounding landscape—they explode straight up from the valley floor in a dramatic way! These peaks tower over the flat plains of Jackson Hole, creating a contrast that makes them visible from miles away. What’s even more special is that you don’t need to be deep in the mountains to enjoy their beauty; some of the best views are from the surrounding meadows, lakes, & valleys. This accessibility means you can soak in the grandeur of the Tetons whether you’re down for a big adventure elopement or you’re having an intimate wedding in the more accessible areas of the park.
